I'll be looking to go pretty easy tomorrow, but I'll plan to sleep in a good bit so I don't want to interfere with that. If I get up reasonably early, I'll check to see when you are running.
Finally, listen to Conto's "plan"... he's got reasonably ambitious goals for his racing through 2011.... Far longer than I have and he says it like I am going to be the one who never gives it up. Whatever Conto...
Truth is we'll probably both still be getting out there with you youngsters till we're Capiello's age (burn!!!), on easy runs at least...
Though, I will say, we have both taken several years completely off, post college... so anything is possible.
See you guys this weekend. Anyone up for an easy run Saturday or Sunday morning? Let me know.
Nice one Swift, I almost laughed out loud at that... Ok, seriously though I do plan to retire more than I had in past... I like to think that after this crazy cycle, I will be able to hang out, get fat, drink beers and spend my saturday mornings drinking coffee and reading the paper in the park, rather than running 22 miles with 15 at 5:30 pace. However, I know I will most likely keep running 60ish miles a week, with a workout every week or two (probably plenty of "Dels" as Swift says). And I'll stay in pretty good shape, though I will cut back both the miles and the workouts and I will take days off when I want/need to based on some semblance of a social life that I hope to regain... and, remember youngsters... I will be 34 next year, at 34, you definitely are getting slower.... I am pretty sure I am getting a bit slower now (at 5mile typs stuff, hopefully not at 26.2).
For the record, Conto and I made a bet this morning... on my time at Club Champs 2011, the over under is 25:25, I took the over, he took the under. The bet is $5.25 (the mile pace for 25:25). We'll see who is buying the other coffee after next years race!!!
Finally... Delaubs!!!! What up man??? Good to hear from you! 124 miles in one week??? You're an animal! Enjoy Portland, and if you want, I can give you an old MTC alumni's info (Seth Holland aka Big Dutch). He is out in Portland now, and still running a bit (he's training for Portland Marathon same day as Chicago). I went for a run with him when I was out in OR in July. Good times. Good luck this weekend, let us know how you go in the half.
Haha... its true. I was going to make mention of the 5/4/3/2/1, but didn't. I mean seriously, that is like a pure V02Max workout... especially as hard as he runs it. He's going to be year round sharp when he "retires".
Del- "Oh, I'll just run 10 a day, a 5/4/3/2/1 and a tempo. Maybe I'll miss a day here and there so I can have a social life."
So basically he'll be constantly fresh, sharp and fit. Dude is going to kill everyone in the 4M-10Ks in the park. Meanwhile I'll be beefy with a 5 handicap and skiing black diamonds with moguls (at least in my dreams). Nice.
Del cant go more than a month without a 5-4-3-2-1 workout - In fact, I just call it the Del now. A not uncommon nor inaccurate post:
Conto - "Okay guys, tough one this week. 8X1000 in 2:52-2:55 with 90 to 120seconds rest. Try and get on the track for these I want you feeling good and 90 seconds should be plenty"
Del - "Hey Conto - No f-ing way. Guys Im doing a 5-4-3-2-1 in the park"
Del is funny. His idea of a toned down running career is basically what he did his whole MTC career save his Boston and Chicago buildups.
1) He still sees himself running every day 2) He still sees himself running 10 every day 3) He still sees himself running workouts (though mostly strength oriented tempos),.
So basically, he will be normal Del rather then insano Del.
Unlike me. My plan is to race Chicago, run Club Nationals Cross, then run 5-7 days a week and hammer some speed and try and run a decent circuit of 3k-half marathons in the winter and spring. I can't wait to be able to miss a weekend, or 3 in a row, because I'm skiing... or just don't feel like slogging it. I can't wait to get some speed back and not have a 5:10 mile feel like a sprint. Figure some weeks may still be 70 miles... but others may be 0. Figure most will be around 50-60.
I'll basically do that until Corporate Challenge or Club Champs. If around July or August I start feeling the itch, I'll put one 3-4 month push in for the NYC Marathon. Figure if I ran 50-60 mpw all winter and spring, and focused on speed, I could ramp up pretty quickly for NY and have as good a showing as any marathon I've run (if not a better one). Then I'll reduce my mileage to pretty much nil, coach, ski and play golf, gain 20 pounds, and be normal. If I don't get the itch in July or August, I'll peak for Club Champs in August, and go to nil after that.
Any way you look at it, the dedication is falling off a cliff after Club Nationals and official retirement is in 2011 for me! Its either that or lose my job and get a divorce!
